Surprising Halifax Takeout Restaurants
It’s been a weird year. We can all agree on that, yes? 2020 was the year of the pandemic and since then, it’s been an ever changing landscape. Restaurants, in particular, were hit really hard. And the assault continues with what seems like constantly changing rules and guidelines. Back in March of 2020 (also knows as “the first wave”), restaurants were forced to close completely. Some didn’t make it (and we’re really sad about that) but other showed their resilience with a quick pivot and now we’re looking at Halifax takeout with fresh eyes.
Restaurants have invested heavily in upgrades and systems to allow us to continue dining out in a safe environment. We’re so proud of our hospitality industry! So, we’re dedicating a portion of our blog to highlighting some of our favourite local restaurants.
We bring you, 12 days of takeout. Below you’ll find 12 Halifax takeout restaurants to try. Yes, you can dine in (at the moment) but what’s really special about these restaurants is that they’ve worked hard to “covid-proof” themselves by offering truly exceptional takeout options in Halifax.
Kajohn Thai Cuisine
6140 Young Street, Halifax
This was our first time ordering from Kajohn so we didn’t know quite what to expect. We were impressed! What stood out for me was the level of customer service. Within minutes of us ordering online, they called us to confirm a few details and our food was delivered within the hour.
Standout Dish: Pad Thai (not surprising, since pad Thai is one of my favourite dishes)
Takeout Options:
Kajohn Thai Cuisine offers both online ordering and calling your order in. They are open for takeout, curbside pickup and delivery every day from 11am to 9pm (9:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays)! Head to their website or give them a call at 902-443-8424
Salvatore’s Pizzaiolo Trattoria
5541 Young Street, Halifax
Salvatore’s is super convenient for us because it’s literally 500m from our front door. What we love most about them is their dedication to simple, fresh ingredients. In fact, they stand by that motto so much that you’re not allowed to add more than 3 ingredients. They maintain that too many ingredients takes away from the experience and we agree!
Standout Dish: Straight up pepperoni pizza, trust us.
Takeout Options:
Take a peek at their entire menu for what is available for takeout at Salvatore’s! Open Monday from 4pm to 10pm, and Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30am to 10pm, Sal’s got your pizza needs covered. Takeout and curbside pickup is available, as well as delivery! Their pizzas have free delivery within the Halifax Peninsula, and non-pizza delivery options are available as well for a reasonable rate. To order, give them a call at 902-455-1133.
Economy Shoe Shop
1663 Argyle Street, Halifax
Ah, the Econo Shoe Shop. It’s an icon in Halifax, truly. When I was younger, this was THE place we all wanted to go during city visits. They’re also one of the early adopters in restaurants who started offering “meal kits” during the first wave of Covid. So, naturally, that’s what we did.
Standout Dish: Nacho Kits! What a fun meal idea. Everything is prepped and ready. You just assemble, bake and enjoy.
Takeout Options:
Open 7 days a week from 12pm to 12am, Economy Shoe Shop offers their full menu for pickup, takeout and delivery! You can find delivery options with Skip the Dishes, and arrange pickup by calling 902-404-8934.
Agricola Street Brasserie
2540 Agricola Street, Halifax

The Brass is also in our neck of the woods, in the North End of Halifax. It also happens to be one of our go-to places when we’re entertaining because we adore the atmosphere. It’s cozy and casual but with an elevated vibe. You could arrive in jeans or a cocktail dress and fit in just nicely. They also do kick-ass food, no joke.
Standout Dish: OK, I know you’ll think this is weird but for me, the Brussels caesar was the standout. It was all good, but that was so unique and I LOVE Brussels sprouts.
Takeout Options:
Open 7 days a week from 3pm until 9pm, The Brasserie is offering more options than what is just on their takeout menu! Check out their social media pages for changing specials, or contact them about their weekly Sunday brunch specials (available with pre-orders). To top off, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, they have partnered with freshontheflycatering.ca to offer complimentary delivery! Give them a call at 902-446-7664 to place your order.
Barrington Steakhouse
1662 Barrington Street, Halifax
One of our favorite restaurants in downtown Halifax, for sure. We’ve darkened their doorway more times than we can count and we’re never disappointed. Barrington Steakhouse ticks all the boxes for me in the world of casual fine dining.
Standout Dish: Steak bread! Don’t get me wrong – their steaks are amazing but the steak bread was so unique and truly delicious so it’s getting my top marks here as a standout.
Takeout Options:
Offering a wonderful takeout menu and a “Steaks at Home” menu that are available for pickup or delivery, Barrington Steakhouse is open Monday through Saturday, 4pm to 10pm. As well as offering an online ordering option, you can call and speak with someone directly at 902-407-5001.
Pickford & Black
Historic Properties, 1869 Upper Water Street, Halifax
We’re a big fan of P&B! Chef Willow and the team at Pickford & Black are top notch. We love the focus on small plates and shareables. When things are “normal” we also love the vibe on the patio overlooking the waterfront!
Standout Dish: Burger She Wrote, easy answer. Aged local beef, bacon stout jam, tequila-pickled jalapeños, smoked Cheddar, bourbon barbecue sauce, fresh arugula, crisp tomato, and grilled pretzel bun…do I need to continue?
Takeout Options:
Pickford & Black is open 7 days a week from 3pm to 9pm for takeout and delivery! They have a dedicated takeout menu that you can find here, and delivery is offered through Skip the Dishes. You are also able to order (and make your payment) online, which is incredibly convenient. However, if you like to have someone to take your order, you can call them at 902-406-3474.
CUT Steakhouse
5120 Salter Street, Halifax
One of the most impressive things we’ve seen is the fine-dining industry’s ability to pivot. A few months ago none of us would have expected that we could enjoy fine-dining at home. But, look at us now! CUT steakhouse (and others) are doing some amazing things and making their experiences accessible via takeout.
Standout Dish: The blue-dot steak. We were pleasantly surprised that the Chef was still able to deliver a perfectly cooked steak at home! I also LOVED the tuna sashimi and the pre-shucked oysters.
Takeout Options:

The Arms Halifax

The Arms, for us, is a new favourite. It’s only been on our radar for the past year but my goodness they do good food. Yes, it’s a pub. But don’t let that fool you. While you can certainly get pub food, they’ve also got a good line up of more elevated fare as well. And, they do take-out VERY well.
Standout Dish: The avocado toast! Don’t even talk to me about ordering anything else because this was AMAZING.
Takeout Options:
Open from 8am to 10pm daily, The Arms offers their complete menu (that’s right, breakfast, comfort food menu, lunch and dinner) for takeout and curbside pickup. They also offer weekly family meals, and delivery is available for these meals on Fridays! Want to place your order? Give them a ring at 902-420-9781!
Piatto Pizzeria + Enoteca
1299 Hollis Street, Halifax
Piatto is another local restaurant that has embraced (and I dare say, mastered) the meal kit trend with their pizza kits. We love these kits! The box comes with dough, toppings and detailed instructions on how to stretch (or roll) your dough and assemble whatever pizza you ordered.
Standout Dish: The Stephanie! I’ve had most (maybe all) of the pizza’s at Piatto and The Stephanie is still my favorite with caramelized onion, prosciutto, goat cheese and balsamic reduction. Pro Tip: I add arugula!
Takeout Options:
You can order and pick up your DIY pizza kits (or anything else on their delicious menu) from Tuesday through Sunday, 4pm to 9pm (10pm on Fridays and Saturdays). Delivery is also available through Skip the Dishes, or you can order takeout and pickup by calling at 902-406-0909!
Gahan House Halifax
5239 Sackville Street, Halifax
Gahan is our local personal watering hole – we spend a fair amount of time there. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, and the people are GREAT. They’ve also mastered the art of take-out with dishes like their burrito bowl, Mac n’ cheese, and curry!
During the holidays, they also offered cookie decorating kits (pictured here). How cool is that? And, if you’re looking for something to become quickly addicted to: the cheese dip. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Standout Dish: Am I allowed to say the dip and the beer? Jokes aside, it’s all good but I really enjoyed the curry!

Feast Box’s from CUT

This is cool! Select steakhouses around the city (like CUT) are now offering at home steak kits. These “Feast Boxes” come stuffed with premium ingredients so that you can grill your own perfect steak at home. They also contain Chef’s grilling instructions and all the fixings (sauces, spices, aioli, etc).
Standout Dish: The steak! Obviously!

EOG was on our 12 days of takeout list but schedules didn’t allow us to order. However, we still wanted to share them with you. We’ve enjoyed the EOG food on more than one occasion and happen to know they produce some pretty great food.
Standout Dish: Their fried Brussels sprouts! Yes, again with the Brussels sprouts but I’m telling you – they’re amazing! Also, their “Damn fancy nachos” are pretty damn good

It’s our intention, with these blogs, to support the local restaurants that have been hit so hard in our region over the last year. By choosing to order Halifax takeout or dine in (when it’s safe) you’re choosing to support an industry that’s really been put through the wringer.
Of course I understand that not everyone is in a financial position to so do but, if you are, you should.
