No one wants to get or give a gift that they won’t use. Am I right? In this “favourite things gift guide” we’re dishing on our own personal favourites we actually own and use everyday. These are items that we’ve either purchased or received from loved one’s as gifts and they all things that make our lives easier and better.
Let’s not waste time talking about it. Let’s just dive right in to Dashboard Living’s favourite things. And, just in case you’d rather watch or listen to our opinions and nonsense, here’s yours truly, gushing about each item on this list in real life!

FAVOURITE THINGS GIFT GUIDE
1. Local Spirits
Unless the people on your list don’t drink (or entertain those who do), local spirits, wines and craft beers are always a great gift idea. Not only does this kind of gift support local business but it also elevates any gathering to have local products on hand!
2. Bose Sound Link
This Bose Sound Link Mini was a gift that totally wasn’t on my wish list but that I received a couple of years ago. Since then, I’m sure I’ve used it every single day! The sound is spectacular, it’s small enough to travel with but robust enough to be durable and it holds a charge for a long time.
3. Saje Pocket Pharmacy
I know what you’re thinking… “Um, Sara – why is this in all of your gift guides?”. Because I take it everywhere with me and I would be lost without it! Seriously, this little pocket pharmacy is the best ever and makes a perfect gift for anyone on your list.
4. S’well Bottle
There are plenty of super cool water bottles out there now but S’wells are still my favourite because they’re effective (keeping things piping hot or icy cold for full days) AND they’re just so darn cute. I love all the patterns but my current obsession is with the marble varieties (hint, hint… in case anyone’s reading who’s got this girl on their list).
5. Our Favourite Books
We read a lot. All different genres. But, if we’re honest, we are all about personal mastery and personal growth books that help us evolve into better humans. These are a few of our current favs this year:
You Are A BadAss – Jen Sincro
I will go on record and say this is my favourite personal development book I’ve (I think) ever read. It was easy to get through, I love her no bulls*t approach (and language) and really appreciated the action steps. So many books promise actionable items and don’t deliver but this one absolutely does.
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up
Truth: I didn’t read this book. This is Brent’s pick and he loved it. It’s short, sweet and to the point (so I promise to read it within the next month). It’s a goodie for anyone who’s trying to let go of “stuff” and start moving towards a more minimalist approach (which we are).
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
We both read and really enjoyed this book. Much like “You are a badass”, we liked the straight forward approach and actionable suggestions throughout the book.
If I’m completely honest, I didn’t love this AS much as those other two I’ve just mentioned but it was still a good (and easy) read. I actually enjoyed this book during our last beach vacation, lounging by the pool and it was (if nothing else) a great conversation starter! HINT: If you’re wanting quiet time, I’d suggest covering the title because EVERYONE will ask you about it.
And a couple of non-personal growth books for good measure:
The Alice Network
Not a book I would normally pick (it was a book club pick) and I found it a bit slow to get started but once it did it was well worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed this read.
This was the most binge worthy book (fiction, that is) that I’ve read in a long time. It’s long (nearly 700 pages) but I truly couldn’t put it down. It’s an easy read and one of those books that hooks you from the very beginning and keeps you enthralled until the last page. I HIGHLY recommend this!
6. Local Food Gifts
Another easy choice for those “hard to buy for” folks on your list. Who doesn’t love something sweet under the tree? Particularly if it’s a locally produced or hand crafted product. Appleton Chocolates are always part of our gift giving stategy!
7. Local Coffee
You see a trend right? Local consumables are just such an easy answer when it comes to gift giving. Why? Because they’re awesome (obviously), you’re supporting local (also awesome), they’re yummy, and you can give them every single year (because they’re consumable). Now do you get it? We’ve got a whole gift guide for coffee lovers (because we’re a crazy bunch who enjoy the finer things in life) but Aroma Maya had to go on our favourite things too. If you love coffee, just go get some OK?
8. JORD Watches
We actually just had these delivered in the mail and haven’t even worn them yet. But, they’re on this list anyway because they are STUNNING. Watches are a classic gift but hand crafted time pieces as unique as these JORD watches take things to another level. They even come in a humidor wooden watch box!
9. Tartan Scarves
No joke, every time I wear my Nova Scotia tartan scarf I get loads of compliments on how beautiful it is. This beauty came from My HOME Apparel last year and it’s seen it’s fair share of events but still looks (and feels) beautiful.
There are two pieces of jewellery I wear all the time. This necklace from last year’s collection at Beck & Boosh and these little gold hoops from Inglis Jewellers (shown in the video). Both work with almost everything (together or separate) and both are my go-to pieces for every occasion. The little hoops are particularly special because they were my first Christmas gift from Mr. Dashboard **swoon**
I saw someone selling their husband’s Blundstones yesterday and actually screamed out loud at my computer scree, “WTF…why would you ever get rid of them?”. This doesn’t make any sense to me! They are actually the best things ever. They’re crazy comfortable, waterproof and the more you beat the up the better they look. What else could you possibly want?
12. SPA ANYTHING
Fella’s, listen to me! Never again say these words in reference to any woman in your life: “She’s so hard to shop for”. NO. She. Is. Not. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be the hero of the holidays:
Step 1: Go to your local spa
Step 2: Buy any service or package
Step 3: Put it under the tree
I personally ADORE Wink Day Spa here in Truro. They’ve got all the services you’d expect plus the latest and greatest techniques AND they are the only licenced spa in our town (which is obviously an necessity for me).
13. Map Art
To me, if I’m going to go to the effort to construct a gallery wall or poke holes in my gyprock then it has better be meaningful. Map Art is huge at the moment and I, for one, love it. SaltWreck sent us these two beautiful pieces to add to our growing collection and we’re thrilled with them. What a perfect gift for the travellers in your life!
14. Shaving Kits & Manscaping
Unless your dude doesn’t grow facial hair, this is a no-brainer. Ladies, you know how we struggle with hair removal in delicate areas? Well, imagine if that were your face! Razor burn, in-grown hairs, and never ending stubble would totally suck to deal with on your face (IMHO). So, why not ditch the disposable razors and treat the men in your life to something a little more elevated like a luxury shaving kit?
15. Bose Sleepbuds
I’ve already gone on and on about these sleep buds. You can read my full review (after several months of using them) here and make up your own mind. The point is, if you’ve got someone on your list who struggles with sleep – this will change their lives! They’re pricey, yes (so don’t say I didn’t warn you) but they’re worth every penny (at least to me they were).
16. Charging Station
We get SO many comments on this. My Dad (shout out to my pops) gave us this last year and we thought it was just brilliant. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that having a zillion chords and plugs all over the house for all of your devices is just annoying. This charging station is awesome and let’s us keep everything organized (and charged) in one place. We love it.
17. Gratitude Journal
You may have noticed we’ve been talking more about personal mastery and growth on the blog as of late. That’s because it’s a topic we both take very seriously and also one that has transformed our lives. This gratitude journal was a lovely gift from Brent last year (for no particular reason) and is also a very simple place to start in your own life. It’s quick, easy to use and creates a scenario where you walk through your day EXPECTING good things to happen. And guess what? They do! I think this would be a super thoughtful gift for anyone on your list this year.
We hope this guide of some of our personal favourite things helps you find meaningful gifts for the people in your life too! Let us know in the comments below if this was helpful!
